As soon as she had compiled her list of photographers, Alison Bernard knew she had the makings of a superb exhibition.
Bernard, director of The Village Gallery in Port Credit, told The News she always wanted to host a photography show, but things never quite fell into line. Until, that is, she arranged for photographers Paul Teolis, Simeon Posen, Russell Brohier and Loys de Fleuriot to exhibit their works at the gallery as part of the Capture exhibition.
"It was something I always wanted to do; it had been in the back of my mind for quite a while, but I was waiting for the right mix of photographers," Bernard said. "We're in our fifth year and we wanted to do something a little different. We're also selling more photographs at the gallery and I've noticed photography (as an art form) seems to be going full-speed ahead."
The exhibition opened with a reception on Saturday. The show runs until March 15.
Teolis, winner of the Best Photograph award at the 2006 Contact Photography Festival, has worked in animation for organizations such as Disney, The National Film Board of Canada and DreamWorks SKG. He has travelled to 30 countries on five continents, snapping shots along the way.
Posen, born and raised in Toronto, is a landscape and architectural photographer with more than four decades of experience. He shoots primarily in
black-and-white and has been influenced by photographers such as Marie Cosindas, Wynn Bullock, Brett Weston and Ansel Adams, having studied with the latter in California.
Brohier was trained in traditional photographic and dark room techniques while studying architecture at the University of Toronto in the early 1980s. He describes himself as a self-taught photographer who has been taking pictures for a quarter century.
South African-born de Fleuriot, who lives in Toronto, came to Canada just over a decade ago. He has been working in the photographic medium for only two-and-a-half years.
"Each artist has very different techniques and present their photographs in different ways," said Bernard. "As well, the subject matter is quite varied. There are landscapes, architecture, interiors and even an Easter Island series from Paul (Teolis)."
