Mississauga East-Cooksville MPP Peter Fonseca has received Portugal’s Order of Merit for his services to the Portuguese community in Ontario.
He was presented with the award on Friday by Ambassador H. E. João Pedro Silveira Carvalho at the Portuguese Consulate in Toronto.
“It is an honour to be receiving this award,” said Fonseca. “I'm thankful to the government of Portugal for this recognition.”
First elected in 2003, Fonseca has served as parliamentary assistant to the Minister of Health and today is Minister of Tourism.
Fonseca was born in Lisbon, Portugal in 1966. He immigrated to Canada with his parents in 1968 and grew up in Toronto’s “Little Italy” and “Little Portugal.”
During the 1990s, he was Canada’s leading marathon runner, representing the country in the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta.
