March 24, 2008 11:19 AM - A veteran Peel Regional Police officer is recovering in Sunnybrook Hospital from a broken pelvis after an Easter Sunday car crash that sent his cruiser flying into a light standard.
The officer, whose name has not been released, was involved in a two-vehicle collision near the intersection of Derry and McLaughlin Rds. at about 2:30 p.m.
The cruiser smashed into a light pole and there were initial concerns about live wires being downed in the area.
Emergency crews used a crane and tow trucks to secure the pole, while firefighters cut through the cruiser's door to remove the officer.
Const. Adam Minnion of Peel Police told The News that the officer's injuries might have been much worse had he not been wearing a seat belt.
The investigation is continuing. No charges have yet been laid.
"Alcohol and speed are not believed to be factors in the accident," Minnion said.
