RE: Article ‘Poverty in Peel...’ April 4 edition
Peel has a 29 year waiting list for affordable housing. No wonder we have chronic and growing food bank needs.
For years, Fair Share for Peel has reported that the Provincial Social Services Funding model is ‘broken’, with Mississauga getting less than half the provincial average for funding. According to the Canadian Council of Social Development (CCSD), more than 88,000 people in Mississauga exist below the poverty line.
Across Peel, more than 35 schools have breakfast programs and 5,500 people are using the food bank every month.
The situation is not going away. How can it, when politicians, such as MPP Bob Delaney, are quoted in The News as saying that Mississauga has merely “pockets of poverty.”
