Peel Regional Police homicide investigators are trying to piece together details of the fight that led to the slaying of Keith Shortridge, 43.
Police were called to a building on Shallford Rd. in Malton at about 7:15 p.m. Neighbours had reported a stabbing.
The victim, who's known to police, was taken to hospital, where he died a short time later.
An autopsy is scheduled for tomorrow.
Police cordoned off the street for more than 12 hours as a forensic team gathered evidence in the basement apartment of a semi-detached brick home police describe as a rooming house.
A man who identified himself only as Charles, and who said he was a friend of Shortridge, said the incident occurred during a game of basketball outside the home.
"I don't know who did this or why this happened. I'd like to know, but I wasn't there," he said. "All I know is my boy is dead."
It's Mississauga's sixth murder this year. Last year, there were 10 in the city.
