A former National Football League superstar will take to the field when the Canadian Football League’s Toronto Argonauts open training camp in Mississauga next month.
While he didn’t create the same hype as Ricky Williams did when he signed with the Argos two years ago, David Boston made a much bigger splash when he entered the NFL in his first three seasons.
Chosen eighth overall in the 1999 NFL draft, Boston caught 40 passes for 473 yards and two touchdowns in his rookie season with the Arizona Cardinals. Two years he was off to the pro Bowl after catching 98 balls for 1598 yards and eight touchdowns.
Since then, the six-foot-two, 228-pound wideout's career has suffered numerous injury problems and he has played in only 56 career games for Arizona, the San Diego Chargers and the Miami Dolphins.
Toronto head coach Rich Stubler, a Mississauga resident, hopes the 29-year-old can rekindle his career with the Double Blue.
“We are extremely excited about signing David,” Stubler said yesterday. “We have been looking for a big, physical receiver and he certainly fulfills that role. He has the size and speed to be a dominant player in our league as the wider field should fit well with his natural abilities.”
Boston said he's looking forward to a fresh start here.
“I’m extremely excited to come to Toronto and compete, and hopefully win a Grey Cup championship,” said Boston, who was born in Humble, Texas. “I’m thankful for the opportunity the organization has given me and I’m looking forward to being at training camp.”
