May 5, 2008 02:53 PM - An evening of cultural music, performed by students is set for Tuesday.
Peel District School Board students in Grades 3-12 will participate in the fourth annual Peel Music Showcase.
The showcase begins at 7:30 p.m. tomorrow at The Living Arts Centre (LAC) in Mississauga with 400 students from 72 schools performing music from different cultures in various styles and languages.
"This annual event celebrates the art of music and the importance of quality music education in schools across Canada. Students, their families, teachers and volunteers have all dedicated countless hours of work to make this a truly special evening for everyone," Mary Ann Fratia, instructional co-ordinator for the arts, health and physical education at the Peel board, said. "We are exceptionally grateful to LAC for their ongoing support and we are delighted our students can showcase their talents in such a magnificent venue."
Preparation for this event began in November with auditions that led to 400 out of 715 students being selected to participate in performances by three choirs, an honour world drumming ensemble, and intermediate jazz ensemble, and two concert bands.
Over 40 expert Peel music teachers and two guest conductors have contributed their expertise to celebrating the joy of music by encouraging and enhancing the student performances through ongoing guidance and feedback. Brenda Uchimaru will be the guest conductor for the senior choir, and Colin Clarke will be leading the senior honour band ensemble.
The showcase will culminate with a finale that features all students and teachers performing an arrangement by Peel music teacher John Chalmers titled 'O Siem'.
Tickets for the event are $10 and can be purchased through all participating schools and from the LAC box office.
