Parts of the Applewood Village Plaza have been temporarily closed after one of the walls began to collapse this morning.
City of Mississauga Chief Building Official Agris Robeznieks told The News that construction workers, under the supervision of engineering firm Terra Probe, were removing underground tanks behind the plaza yesterday. Everything was in good shape when the workers left last night, but when employees returned to finish the job this morning they discovered parts of one of the walls had begun to collapse, he said.
According to Robeznieks, the foundation wall had shifted into the excavation pit, which put another wall behind it in peril of collapse.
He said the hole is being filled in and the wall repaired in the hopes of re-opening the building tomorrow. He also said he issued a "remedy unsafe order," meaning the issue will need to be addressed in a report to his department before the building can reopen.
Ken Laverty, owner of Total Business Solutions in the plaza, was out making deliveries this morning when an employee called him and told him not to bother coming back.
"She called to say the building has been shut down," said Laverty. "I don't know how long it's going to be closed. (It's a hardship) on everybody because it's a Friday and we're totally shut down."
The plaza is located on North Service Rd. between Cawthra and Dixie Rds.
