May 12, 2008 03:00 PM - This is the time of the year when Josh Brenn would normally be on a baseball diamond, patrolling right field for the Toronto Maple Leafs of the Inter-County League.
Not this year.
Instead, he's going to be spending a lot of time on the trainer's table, undergoing a long process of recovery from surgery for a torn ACL in his left knee, the result of a freak accident during a game with his junior college team in Texas last month.
"I was in right field and I was chasing down a fly ball when my cleat got caught in the grass," said Brenn, a graduate of Rick Hansen Secondary School who played his minor baseball for the Mississauga North organization.
"I fell over, threw the ball while I was on my knees and then they carted me off the field. I hope to be back in time to play in the fall."
That's a tall wish since the person overseeing his physiotherapy and rehabilitation, Dave Wright of Mind To Muscle, estimates the recovery time is anywhere from four to six months.
"That's usually the time for an elite athlete," said Wright, who has the job of helping Brenn regain his range of motion and stability.
Brenn, who played with the Maple Leafs last season, had his heart set on next season after signing a letter of intent to play for Missouri Baptist University in St. Louis.
"A lot of schools were interested originally, but then the interest died off after I got hurt," he said. "This school (Missouri Baptist) called me and said they were still interested. They're one of the top 20 schools in the nation."
Brenn, who played his collegiate ball this year with Lon Morris Junior College in Jacksonville, Texas, batted .455 within his conference and .345 for the entire season. He was named to the first team All-Conference squad.
