Charged with organizing a charity book sale to raise funds for Credit Valley Hospital's pediatrics department, Andrews figured she'd be happy to raise about $10,000. Thanks to an outpouring of support from the community, though, in which more than 30,000 books were donated, she's increased her goal to $25,000.
"I've done book sales before, so I thought we might be able to raise $10,000, but we actually had to turn people away (because) we've had so many get in touch," said Andrews. "The response from the community has been overwhelming."
The sale runs Saturday from 9 a.m.-6 p.m. along Main St. in Streetsville, which will be closed to traffic between Church and Queen Sts.
Andrews said books in 34 different categories, including mystery, horror, business, biography, sport, fiction and non-fiction, among others, will be for sale. Most books sell for about $1 or $2, although prices range from 10 cents to upwards of $10.
The sale, presented as part of ongoing festivities to celebrate Streetsville's 150th anniversary, has been about nine months in the making.
"I think I've touched each and every one of the 30,000 books," said Andrews, with a laugh. "We wanted to give to Credit Valley because it's our community hospital. What better place to donate to. It's a fantastic cause."
Also, the Lion's Club will host a hot dog barbecue to raise funds for the cause. WAVE 94.7 Radio will send its event cruiser to the sale from 3-6 p.m.
Book readings for children, at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m., are also planned.
