Although the 29-year-old Canadian bantamweight champion’s opponent has yet to be determined, it’s stacking up to be an entertaining card.
Also scheduled to box that night are a couple of middleweights, Commonwealth champion ‘Dazzling’ Darren Barker and Tyrone ‘The One’ Brunson.
Prior to turning professional, Kooner and England’s Barker, crossed paths as amateurs.
Both captured medals at the Commonwealth Games, with Barker winning gold, and Kooner, silver.
Like Kooner, Barker hasn’t looked back since turning professional and enters the card with an undefeated 17-0 record.
Speaking of undefeated, Brunson has a history of making short work of his opponents. Brunson holds the record for most consecutive first-round knockouts, with 19.
However, the fans will come out to see the Canadian Kooner in action.
Trained by Mississauga’s Chris Johnson, who until recently also trained world IBF champion Steve Molitor, the 5-foot-5 Kooner last fought on March 20 at the Forum Centre in Halifax, when he defeated Jason Hayward after the referee stopped the fight in the eighth round.
Kooner’s promoters at the Hennessy Sports group predict this will be a big year for Kooner.
“Kooner will be making his move this season,” predicted Hennessy’s Adam Harris. “He is quickly developing into a complete and dangerous fighter. We expect big things from him.”
