Hargrove, 64, was one of 75 new appointments to the Order of Canada that were announced on Canada's 141st birthday.
The current national president of the Canadian Auto Workers trade union was recognized for his contributions as a respected labour leader and for his efforts fighting for human rights in Canada and abroad.
Canada's highest honours were awarded for the first time in 1967, during Canada's Centennial Year.
