July 7, 2008 08:43 AM - A Mississauga woman is putting the onus back on parents when it comes to helping children achieve academic success, The Toronto Sun is reporting.
Mississauga mother Sophia Brown Ramsay and Milton's Tristin Burns have run the Teaching Innovative Parenting Skills (TIPS) program in Peel Region for the past two years. The program is designed to provide parents with a plan and strategies that will allow them to motivate their child to do well at school.
The women say the program began with them sharing stories with other parents about the challenges of keeping a child motivated at school.
Convinced that sharing these tales with other families would ultimately help the young students, the women started the program TIPS that's presented in a total of four two-and-a-half hour workshops.
"These workshops leave parents feeling more informed and confident about their position in the educational system," Brown Ramsay told The Toronto Sun. "The program also identifies for parents the importance of bringing school back into the home and home back in into the school."
Burns said her oldest son is an A student when he's feeling motivated. However, he would be doing well to turn in his assignments on time when he wasn't.
"My husband and I realized we needed to raise the level of participation in our son's learning process," Brown told the Toronto newspaper. "We did this by increasing our involvement and visibility in the school and playing a more active role when dealing with homework assignments and study habits."
The couple's son has since graduated.
TIPS is one program the women offer through their See Believe Achieve Success Training business.
