It was a routine conversation with the fire chief that prompted Rotarians Jerry Wijngaard and David McQuilkin to launch a campaign to donate and install smoke alarms for Mississauga seniors who cannot afford the devices.
McQuilkin, co-owner of White Oak Ford Lincoln, said the idea stemmed from the basic mandate of the Rotary Club — to help out the community in different ways. And what better way to help people than the installation of a life-saving smoke detector?
“The idea was suggested (by Mississauga's fire chief) that there was a definite need for people in the community, specifically seniors who are either physically incapable of installing smoke alarms and changing batteries or are economically challenged,” McQuilkin said.
He said as part of the campaign, 100 smoke detectors have been purchased and trained personnel are ready and waiting to install them in homes.
“If there's a sustainable need for more smoke detectors, we're ready to help,” said McQuilkin.
If you're a senior and are interested in having a smoke alarm installed, call McQuilkin at 905-281-4601.
