July 9, 2008 08:12 AM - Three Mississaugans are in contention after yesterday's opening round of the Ontario Women's Amateur golf championship at the Bay of Quinte Country Club.
Brogan McKinnon, a 13-year-old who plays out of the Rattlesnake Point Golf Club, holds down third place after shooting a three-over-par 75 in the first round. She entered the clubhouse three shots behind leader Mary Ann Lapointe of Georgetown.
Close behind are Stephanie Simich and Michelle Lee, who are among seven players tied at four over par 76. Lee plays out of the Caledon Woods Golf Club and Simich is not attached to any course.
Lee is coming off a huge win last week in Saskatoon where she captured the girls division at the CN Future Links Prairie Championship.
It was a disappointing day for three other Mississaugans.
Trafalgar Golf and Country Club member Lynne Owen and Nadia Ayoub of the North Halton Golf and Country Club finished well back on opening day. They both carded rounds of 14-over-par 86.
Sue Black of the Credit Valley Golf and Country Club withdrew.

Two Mississaugans sit in eighth place after yesterday's first round of the Ontario Men's Amateur Golf Championship at the Islington Golf Club.
Graham Baillargeon, a member at the Trafalgar Golf and Country Club, and Michael Zizek from the York Downs Golf and Country Club both fired a one-under-par 70, entering the clubhouse four shots back of tournament leader Nathan Lockey of Brantford.
Jonathan Kim-Moss, the only other Mississaugan in the field, is among 14 players tied for 29th place after shooting a two-over-par 74.
Play was suspended during the opening round as a storm blew through the area, leaving 42 players to complete the first round this morning.
After today's second round, the field will be cut to the top 60 players for the third round.
