July 1, 2008 12:00 AM - Mississauga's business community is busting at the seams. With over 53,000 businesses, more than 1,300 multinational corporations, 50 different private sector business parks, and sporting a diverse array of business sectors (transport, high-tech, manufacturing, etc.), the city continues to be an economic driver in Canada's industrial heartland.
Of course, Mississauga is blessed with Pearson International Airport within its borders, Canada’s largest and busiest airport, seven major highways and two national railways (Canadian National and Canadian Pacific).
All this is possible because Mississauga has a pro-business mayor who celebrated at age 87, her 30th year in office in 2008.
Thanks to McCallion, Mississauga has remained debt free for several years with close to $800 million in reserve and was the second place winner for “Best Economic Potential in North America” in the “North American Cities of the Future 2007/2008” competition.
There are 10 major universities and 11 technical colleges, all within a reasonable commuting distance.
To top it all off, Mississauga has also been recognized as the safest city in Canada for the past seven years in a row by independent national studies.  It’s no wonder businesses seem to flock here.
Mississauga is divided into 12 business planning districts, three of which are business parks.
Its 10,918 non-retail businesses make up most of the city’s workforce with 274,159 employees (there are approximately 406,000 employees in total in Mississauga).  Mississauga’s Northeast district is the largest employing around 98,760 people with 4,941 non-retail businesses, followed not-so-closely by Gateway district, which boasts 44, 304 employees and 1,176 businesses.  Meadowvale Business Park is the largest district planning business park in the city with 844 non-retail businesses and 34,206 employees.
Airport Corporate boasts 21,645 employees and 459 non-retail businesses and our Lester B. Pearson district contains 141 businesses and 17,942 workers.
Mississauga’s Manufacturing sector is the largest business sector in the city by about 20,000 employees.  It supports 2,573 businesses and 77,617 employees and is driven by the automotive and aerospace industries.
The second largest business sector is Wholesale Trade at 57,517 employees and another 37,562 employees keep our Transportation and Warehousing sector functioning.
But Mississauga isn’t all warehouses and automobiles; we’ve got our fair share of office buildings as well.  22,457 people spread over 681 businesses maintain the city’s Finance and Insurance sector while a startling 22,423 people work within the Professional, Scientific and Technical Services.
Mississauga is now home to the third largest cluster of biomedical businesses in Canada.
This is the office 2008 nomineees list for our 'Top Performers', and official winners will be announced in our special edition published in our pull-out issue in October.
