July 9, 2008 05:27 PM - A 77-year-old cyclist struck by a garbage truck in Streetsville Monday morning, has died in hospital.
Peel Regional Police are appealing for witnesses to come forward with information on the crash that claimed the life of Mississauga resident Tony Mota.
Police say it was just after 7:30 a.m. when a garbage truck hit the man from behind as he rode his bicycle in the northbound curb lane of Queen St., just south of Ellen St.
A 28-year-old Mississauga man was driving a 1987 Mack disposal truck in the northbound lane along Queen St. when the vehicle struck Mota from behind and knocked him off his bike.
The cyclist was transported to St. Michael's Hospital in Toronto with life-threatening injuries. He died today.
Police say it's still too early to determine whether charges will be laid.
Officers with the major collision bureau continue to investigate. Anyone with information is asked to call police at 905-453-2121, ext. 3410 or Peel Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS.
