Stone River, a classic and Southern rock-influenced band that also includes guitarist Jeff Desilets, bassist Jay Macedo, drummer Tommy Brown and vocalist Renan Yildizdogan, Death of Eight and Crash Kelly are also on the bill.
"When I found out the news, I had to sit down because it was so much to take all at once," said Flower, 25. "This is the biggest thing I've done and hopefully it's the first of many. We all understand it's the biggest stage, both literally and figuratively, we've ever been on so we need to bring our A game."
After applying for the gig, the band was selected by the Crowes to be their opening act.
"We heard that we beat out like 300 other bands to get the slot," Flower said. "It's very flattering and there are lots of good bands out there. Hopefully, when all is said and done, we'll have earned the right to talk with (the Crowes) and maybe even hang out for a bit after the show."
The band formed four years ago, but Flower and Desilets have been playing together for about 11 years after meeting at Iona Secondary School.
Stone River is often compared to the band it will open for this weekend.
"From day one, people have been saying we sound like The Black Crowes," said Flower. "People always pick that band first. It's cool, but we never told ourselves we were going to be the Canadian version of them."
The band has recorded an album, its debut, called In the Valley of the Butterflies. Several tracks, including Southern Feeling, Cold Black River and Can't Help Loving Her, can be heard at www.myspace.com/stoneriver.
The band hits the stage at 8:30 p.m. for a 40-minute set.
Tickets cost $22.99, $25.99, $49.99 and $69.99. Call 519-337-4474 or visit www.sarniabayfest.com.
