Knezevic covered the distance in 2 minutes, 6.19 seconds, well off the pace set by winner Dmitri Colupaev of Germany who clocked in at 2:02.28.
Meanwhile, Mississauga's Hassaan Abdel-Khalik finished ninth overall in the men's 200-metre freestyle, narrowly missing the cut for the finals. His best time in the heats was 1:51.36. The event was won by Russia's Damila Izotov in a time of 1:47.63.
Knezevic, Abdel-Khalik and the rest of the Canadian team stand second overall behind the United States through five events at the 29-nation swim meet. Competition runs through Sunday.
In other results yesterday, Amanda Reason of Windsor and Tess Simpson of Cornwall both won bronze medals for Canada. After two days of competition, Canada has four bronze medals.
Reason finished third in the women's 50-metre breaststroke while Simpson equalled that performance in the women's 100-metre backstroke.
Competition continues today.
