July 11, 2008 08:40 AM - A Mississauga grandmother is planning a party for people who wanted to see her granddaughter run and play like any other little girl.
Last year, Margaret Dalton held a benefit in Toronto to raise $46,000, funds that would cover the costs of drugs and a prosthetic for two-year-old Keira Neal, who is now learning to walk after cancer forced doctors to remove her leg. The prosthetic and drugs that were not covered by insurance.
"There is no way I could thank every individual, so we thought it would be nice to have everyone come out and meet Daphne and Keira," Dalton told The Toronto Sun.
Keira's mom, Daphne Neal, grew up in Mississauga and now lives in B.C.
Next Thursday, Dalton will host a thank-you reception from 3-6 p.m. at the Westmount Gallery at 88 Advance Rd. in Etobicoke. Her daughter and granddaughter will be there.
"Things are going well," Daphne Neal told The Toronto Sun. "(Keira) loves dolls, building towers and destroying them and playing in the sandbox and the pool."
Neal says she is so grateful for all the support.
"I'm thankful for all the people who helped," she said. "It wasn't just financially. We don't have family out here (in British Columbia)."
Keira was just 14 months old when she was diagnosed with a rare and aggressive childhood cancer in her right thigh. Doctors removed her upper leg and then attached the lower leg. Her foot fits into the prosthetic.
