July 14, 2008 05:33 PM - The weather was terrible and rain clouds darkened the sky.
Organizers of last month's fundraising book sale in Streetsville were getting worried when the big day arrived and there was heavy rain throughout the morning. Luckily, the weather improved and the sale went off without a hitch.
Throughout the day, some 1,500 people purchased 20,000 books at the sale, which was presented as part of Streetsville's 150th Celebration festivities.
In total, $13,058.35 was raised for the Credit Valley Hospital's Lifetime of Care 45 Million Campaign.
A cheque was presented Monday, July 14 by book sale chair Sue Andrews to CVH representatives who had gathered at the Streetsville cenotaph.
Andrews said she was impressed with how everyone pulled together to make sure the book sale was a success.
"Not one volunteer didn't show up," she said.
The latest capital campaign, undertaken after the hospital raised $50 million for the Carlo Fidani Peel Regional Cancer Centre in a previous fundraising initiative, is gathering money to improve various services at CVH, including labour and delivery as well as palliative care.
The hospital records more than 5,000 deliveries each year, although its infrastructure is designed to accommodate about 2,700 births.
Mayor Hazel McCallion, who was also on hand for Monday's handing over of the cash, said she was shocked the sale took place.
"When I got here for the sale, I couldn't believe the rain," she said. "But it was the size of the crowd I was most impressed with. I actually wondered what it was all about when I first heard of it, but it was a unique idea that's typical of Streetsville."
