July 16, 2008 10:55 AM - One of the most recognizable faces in television today is coming to Mississauga this fall to entertain at the annual Mayor's Gala.
Regis Philbin, who co-hosts the morning television program Live with Regis & Kelly, will be the live entertainment at the Nov. 8 gala, City of Mississauga officials confirmed today. The versatile entertainer is expected to present a variety show with plenty of comedic moments.
"It's a little different from the past (which usually featured a band or musical act)," said City spokesperson Maureen Ellis. "We're always trying to make the gala the best it can possibly be. The committee sits down and puts an awful lot of thought into what would appeal to our audience. We're very pleased to have Regis and I think he's a wonderful and warm entertainer."
Philbin made a name for himself in the mid-1970s as the co-host of morning talk show A.M. Los Angeles. The charismatic entertainer helped bring the show to the top of the local ratings during his time there.
In 1983, he relocated to New York City to join former co-host Cyndy Garvey on The Morning Show. After Garvey and her replacement left, Philbin partnered with Kathie Lee Gifford and the ratings improved.
In 1988, the program became nationally-syndicated.
After Gifford left in 2000, the show continued on as Live with Regis. In 2001, Philbin's current co-host Kelly Ripa joined the program and the show was re-named Live with Regis & Kelly.
Tickets cost $600. To purchase, call 905-615-3200, ext. 4203.
Funds raised from the event will go to the Hazel McCallion Foundation for the Arts, Culture and Heritage to support local initiatives and programs.
