Peel Regional Police say the man, identified by campers as Donald Morrison, remains in critical condition following the assault, which occurred at Indian Line Campground at about 12:15 a.m.
A 22-year-old Mississauga man is facing assault charges in connection with the incident.
According to police, the victim overheard an argument, which appeared to be escalating, between a man and a woman at the Finch Ave. campground.
The man walked over to intervene and was attacked by a younger man, said Peel Cst. Wayne Patterson.
"He noticed a disturbance and was acting like the Good Samaritan trying to help out and settle things down, and now he's in the hospital," he said.
Police say the victim suffered critical injuries after being struck in the head. Both he and his attacker are seasonal residents of the campground, but they don't know each other, Patterson said.
Campers reacted with shock today, saying Morrison is a seasoned outdoorsman who always lends a helping hand to those in need.
"He was like the father of this place, helping the rookie campers when they didn't know how to build a fire pit or put up a tent," said Greta Labib. "He was the repair man for all the trailer owners."
Other temporary residents said Morrison is a retired labourer who wants to relax and travel the world.
Jacob Jeffrey, of Mississauga, is charged with aggravated assault. He appeared in Brampton court this morning for a bail hearing.
Anyone with information is asked to call police at 905-453-2121, ext. 2133.
