Peel Regional Police say the victim, identified by fellow campers as Donald Morrison, is no longer in critical condition and his injuries are no longer considered to be life-threatening. He has been moved out of the Intensive Care Unit at an area hospital.
For nearly 24 hours, Morrison was fighting for his life after being viciously attacked at around 12:15 a.m. at the Indian Line Campground on Finch Ave.
A 22-year-old Mississauga man is facing assault charges in connection with the incident.
According to police, Morrison overheard an argument between a man and a woman that appeared to be escalating. When he walked over to intervene he was attacked by a younger man, said Peel Cst. Wayne Patterson.
"He noticed a disturbance and was acting like the Good Samaritan trying to help out and settle things down, and now he's in the hospital," he said.
Police say the victim suffered critical injuries after being struck in the head. Both he and his attacker are seasonal residents of the campground, but they don't know each other, Patterson said.
Jacob Jeffrey, of Mississauga, is charged with aggravated assault. He has been remanded in custody until his bail hearing July 22.
