July 24, 2008 02:05 PM - Distraction-style thefts are on the rise at Pearson International Airport, and police are warning travellers to protect their belongings.
Officers with the Peel Regional Police Airport Division also remind those using Pearson to be alert to their surroundings.
In recent months, seven people have been arrested at Pearson in connection with these types of thefts, and investigators are probing additional cases as well.
The thieves work in groups of two or three, police say. One will approach the victim, who's using a phone, loading bags or otherwise occupied. While the first culprit interacts with the victim, the others will steal the target's property.
"The thieves will target briefcases, luggage, electronics, passports and any other item that a victim may lose sight of," said Peel Cst. Samantha Nulle.
Passengers are reminded to carry their valuables and bags with them at all times and to be alert if approached by strangers, police say.
"You may have been targeted for distraction by thieves," Nulle said. "Be especially alert while checking in or when loading bags in or out of vehicles."
