Pops welcome summer with Port Credit concert

The Mississauga Pops Concert Band were in final rehearsal at Eden United Church on Wednesday preparing for this Sunday's Sunset Series concert at Port Credit Memorial Park Pavilion.

July 24, 2008 02:21 PM - The Mississauga Pops Concert Band kicks off its summer concert series this Sunday in Port Credit.
The concert, presented as part of the Port Credit Sunset Concert Series, takes place at Port Credit Memorial Park Pavilion. The free show starts at 6:30 p.m.
At a similar concert last year, the band performed a selection of tunes that included Big Band Spectacular with arrangement by Warren Barker, Georges Bizet's Carmen Suite with arrangement by Jack Bullock, Danny Boy with arrangement by Warren Barker, Disney at the Movies with arrangement by John Higgins, Jack Bullock's Four of a Kind, Mancini Magic with arrangement by Jerry Brubaker as well as George and Ira Gershwin's Someone to Watch Over Me with arrangement by Barker.
At Sunday's show, the 55-instrument concert band will perform under the musical direction of Colin Clarke.
The band was originally known as the Meadowvale Concert Band and was created by amateur clarinettist Larry Vella. He brought together neighbours in Meadowvale who shared the desire to play music and wanted to enjoy the camaraderie of performing with others.
The Pops, which received three first-place finishes in the Canadian Band Association's Festival of Bands at the Canadian National Exhibition in 2002 and finished third in 2004, typically performs popular music of many different genres including classical, swing, big band, jazz, marches, contemporary, rock and Broadway tunes.
Guest artists who have performed with the band include Peter Appleyard, Dinah Christie, Luba Goy, Johnny Cowell, Alastair Kay, Bobby Herriot and Canadian composer Howard Cable.
The Pops perform again Aug. 24 at the Central Library Square.

The sunset concert series continues with concerts by Toronto Shadows (Aug. 10), Debi Sander Walker Quartet (Aug. 17) and Debi Sander Walker Swingin' Jazz (Aug. 24). The concerts start at 6:30 p.m.
