The 13-year-old Mississaugan didn’t allow a brief rain delay to put a damper on his game, and he went on to win the Ontario Series event over LeMay, 12, of Waterloo, in extra holes.
The event served as a qualifier, with spots up for grabs in the upcoming Canada International Friendship Cup in British Columbia and the CAN-USA Team Matches in Arizona.
Borg won the boys’ 13-under division in dramatic fashion. He and LeMay each carded scores of 78 and 71 in the first two rounds on the par-72, 5,815-yard course to force the playoff, which Borg eventually captured. He also won the Sundog skills competition.
Borg was ecstatic after the long, hard-fought battle.
“It feels awesome,” he said. “It's my first win of the season and first under-par in a tournament, plus my first playoff win. Matt was up most of the final round and almost had me, till the end.”
Nicholas Crozier, 13, of Unionville, took third place, shooting 160, followed by Mississauga’s Paulino Fernando, who carded a 169.
Kyle Sayani of Mississauga placed 17th in the boys’ 14-16 division.
The Series continues Aug. 4-6 with the MJT Ontario Tour Championship at Mystic Golf Club in Ancaster.
That will be a 54-hole qualifier for the FCWT National Championship in Florida, in 2009.
The non-profit Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour is presented nationally by Boston Pizza and is Canada’s only junior golf tour run exclusively by golf professionals.
