October 1, 2008 01:54 PM - Mississauga tenor Michael Ciufo will lend his voice to a pair of concerts happening this weekend that will feature a sampling of Italy's most romantic music.
Ciufo will join a cast of singers that includes Justin Bacchus, Blair Barnsdale, Raylin Barnsdale, Chris Burke, Julie Cabri, Heidi Cyfco, Leander Mendoza, Clarissa Miranda, Loralee Morgan and Melissa Shriner when Windwill Theatre presents Amore — An Evening of Italian Love Songs. The concerts take place Friday and Saturday in the Great Hall at the Unitarian Congregation of South Peel.
The evening will consist of a blend of operatic arias and Neapolitan favourites from composers and vocalists such as Puccini, Verdi and Pavarotti. The audience can also expect musical selections from Bocelli, Josh Groban and even Dean Martin.
Through the music, the singers hope to conjure up memories of the Tuscan Hills or of strolling though the ancient, busy piazzas of Rome, Venice, Napoli and Florence. As they say, Italy is the land of lovers.
As an added bonus, the troupe will also present Ah Voltige Mon Amour (Ah My Love Flutters). It's a musical composition written by Charles Demuynck set to a Gerard Etienne poem.
Ciufo, meanwhile, is nominated for a MARTY in the Emerging Performing Arts Award category. The awards will be presented on Oct. 20.
Ciufo has sung at the celebration when Mayor Hazel McCallion received her appointment to the Order of Canada, was a featured soloist at the Opera Under the Stars concert in Toronto and performed at the Pantheon in Rome. The singer released a collection of Italian music — Vieni Sul Mar — as his debut album.
Other shows by Windmill Theatre this season include The Fab Five (Nov. 7-8), Ring the Bells (Dec. 12-13), The Celtic Way (Jan. 30-31) and Imagine (May 1-2).
Tickets cost $25. Call 905-338-5702.
