In the official opening ceremonies Thursday morning, 44 of Siemens' wind turbines were up and running in the Port Alma Wind Power project in the Municipality of Chatham-Kent, Ontario.
The wind farm, which is owned and operated by Kruger Energy Port Alma Limited Partnership with a supply of 44 2.3-MW wind turbines from Siemens, has more than 100 Megawatts (MW) of power and is expected to power 30,000 homes annually.
Senior vice president of the Siemens Energy Sector in Canada Bill Smith said in the last few years, Canada's unprecedented growth in the wind energy market shows how wind energy is playing an important role in the overall energy mix, alongside conventional power generation sources.
In July, Canada had 1,876 MW of installed wind capacity, enough to power 569,000 homes, according to the Canadian Wind Energy Association (CANWEA).
Along with the wind turbine blades, Siemens also provided tower installations and commissioning services, and will supply maintenance and service for the next two years.
This contribution adds to the company's environmental profile that it has been building since 2003. Seimens has installed wind power systems that have a combined capacity of more than 3,000 MW, which will save as much as eight million tons of carbon dioxide, a greenhouse gas, per year.
Siemen's head office is on Derry Rd. in Mississauga. The company is one the largest world of electronics and electrical engineering, operating in the industry, energy and healthcare sectors. The Siemens Energy Sector is the world's leading supplier of a complete spectrum of products, services and solutions for the generation, transmission and distribution of power and for the extraction, conversion and transport of oil and gas.
