Beauchamp strikes for double gold in Rio.
Mississauga’s Brian Beauchamp earned two gold medals at the World Masters and Seniors Jiu Jitsu Championships in Rio de Janeiro.
Mississauga’s Brian Beauchamp was a double gold medalist at the World Masters and Seniors Jiu Jitsu Championships in Rio de Janeiro last weekend.
The 50-year-old captured both the Middleweight and Absolute (open weight) classifications for fighters age 30-over.
With his two wins, Beauchamp became the first Canadian to win both the Pan American and World Masters.
A one-time member of the Canadian national judo team, Beauchamp took up Jiu Jitsu two years ago while visiting Black Trucks Martial Arts in Fort Myers, Florida.
Since then, he has gone on a tear, winning the 2007 Grapplers Quest Canadian Grappler of the Year, the Pan Ams and World Masters.
Beauchamp, who trains out of Team Kombat Arts in Mississauga, was also elevated to purple belt status.
“That’s pretty big,” said Beauchamp. “It usually takes six years or so.”
Beauchamp said being a black belt in judo enabled him to fast-track in the sport, with only the brown belt in his way before reaching black belt status.
