Mississauga Warriors blow past tepid Storm

Six weeks into the regular season, the question isn’t whether the Mississauga Varsity Warriors will win — that appears to be a given in the weak Wettges Central Division — but by how much.
The sky’s the limit appears to be the answer as the Warriors blew out the Newmarket Storm 65-7 Saturday, to improve to 6-0 on the season. This followed a 52-6 dunking of the Pickering Dolphins, on July 23.
Once again, the Warriors were paced by Jordan Wilson-Ross, who had 218 rushing yards on nine carries and three touchdowns. The running back went into the weekend as the Ontario Varsity Football League’s (OVFL) leading rusher, with an 11.8 yard-per-carry average.
“The offensive line did a great job springing him loose and then Jordan regularly made several Newmarket players miss their tackles on his way to his big yardage,” said Mississauga head coach John Simas.
Backfield mate Jameek Murray also had a big day, with 134 yards in receptions and 32 yards rushing and two TDs. Quarterback Chris Rosetti had a very good game as well, completing nine of 16 passes for 208 yards. He threw for two touchdowns and ran in another.
Meanwhile, the defence, which leads the league by giving up only 27 points in six games, repeatedly held the Storm to four-and-outs. Raye Hartman continued his impressive play with two interceptions, returning one for a 77-yard major, as well as blocking a punt.
The Warriors’ next game is this Saturday against the Metro Toronto Wildcats at Esther Shiner Stadium.
“They’re a team that always has a strong defence. It will be a great test for our team to see how good we really are,” said Simas.
Meanwhile, the Warriors Junior Varsity squad kept pace, with a 45-0 shutout of the Junior Storm. They, too, sport a perfect 6-0 record.
