December 14, 2007 09:25 PM - Prompted by the murder of 16-year-old Aqsa Parvez, the national president of the Mississauga-based Islamic Supreme Council of Canada  is going on a weekend hunger.
Syed Soharwardy, who is also an imam, or Islamic spiritual leader, is planning to go on a hunger strike to illustrate that domestic violence is against the teachings of Islam.
“We should not be using religion as a scapegoat to justify what we need,” Soharwardy, who lives in Calgary, told Canadian Press. “We should resolve our disputes based on reasoning, logic (and) cool-mindedness.”
The comments by the imam come in the wake of the murder of Mississauga resident Aqsa, who was allegedly strangled to her death by her father Muhammad Parvez, early this week.
Soharwardy is joined by other spiritual leaders from across the country, who have also publicly condemned the act.
Soharwardy said family violence plagues every group in society, but it seems that faith is only used as an excuse when it comes to Muslims.
