Cangene Corporation, one of Canada’s largest and oldest biopharmaceutical companies, is moving its research and development division from Mississauga back to Winnipeg, where the firm is headquartered.
Cangene officials said, “the company has instituted a number of strategic changes in its research and development processes over the past several months to formalize and enhance new product development.”
A significant portion of the research work at Cangene’s American Dr. location in Mississauga was related to contract research projects with the Apotex Group. That is now completed and the two drugs, called Accretropin(TM) and Leucotropin(R), have been submitted to be licensed.
In explaining the decision to move, Cangene officials said, “having a consolidated group will help to strengthen the links between research, product development and manufacturing activities, and increase operational effectiveness.”
The decision to end the research function in Mississauga will mean a four per cent reduction in staff and annual savings of $1.5 million. Non-research functions are not affected at the Mississauga office, which will remain open.
