Feeling uneasy

Dear Editor:
I was reading online about an American criminal, Joseph Pannell, who was charged with shooting an officer in Chicago, but was able to escape and live in Mississauga for 39 years.
When criminals cross the border, they should not be able to change their names and still be able to get legal identification, such as a driver’s license or passport. That was exactly what Pannell, or should I say “Gary Freeman,” did.
Citizens of Mississauga believe this is a safe community, but something like this makes people uneasy and something must be done to restore their confidence. What actions have been taken to prevent this happening today?
It does not mean that because this incident happened before 9/11, which led to beefed-up border security, that criminals cannot still cross onto Canadian soil.
If illegal immigrants from Mexico are still able to make it to America, imagine who could come to Canada.
Police from Canada and America should utilize today’s technology and start a shared online database of suspected criminals who have jumped the border.
Also, photographs should be released of all fugitives such as Pannell, so that they're apprehended faster. This will ensure that unlawful people don’t escape the justice system and that society is safer.

Letter of the week

Dear Editor: The Ontario Power Authority has done many things right and its technical conclusions are sound, but it’s pushing the same line in the southwest GTA as it did in northern York.
