From lectures on cyber bullying, the dangers of social networking sites and why diets fail, to demonstrations on UV testing of sunglasses and lead testing of common household items, the first-ever Science Rendezvous at University of Toronto Mississauga promises a little bit of everything.
On Saturday, May 10, UTM will open its doors to the public to showcase cutting-edge science and technology teaching and research that takes place inside the campus' labs and classrooms.
Science Rendezvous, being organized at various locations throughout the GTA, including U of T (St. George), York University and the University Health Network, seeks to connect science with the everyday reality of people’s lives, says Devin Kreuger, who's organizing the event at UTM.
“People overlook how much of our world is influenced by science and technology,” Kreuger said. “We hope this event contributes to a greater public awareness of and interest in science. We want to get people talking about science and are hoping this will create a public Zeitgeist the way Nuit Blanc does for the arts.”
Science Rendezvous runs from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Admission is free.
Lecture topics include genes and behaviour (research that will aid future understanding and treatment of food-related disorders such as obesity), why it's hard to change when we know we should (resistance to changing behaviour and its correlation to dieting), how aging affects communication and social interaction in older adults, cyber bullying and dangers of social networking sites.
Various demonstrations, experiments and displays are also planned for the day.
All events will be held in the South Building’s Meeting Place and nearby classrooms.
